The Parama Island – Park Circus Elevated Corridor Project, Kolkata

Kolkata’s longest flyover… resolves traffic snarl to silk route

HCC constructed the 4.5km long Kolkata’s longest flyover between Parama Island and Park circus. The first leg of the flyover was inaugurated on October 09, 2015. The two intermediate carriage ways linking the main flyover to and from the AJC Bose flyover will be completed soon. This elevated corridor will offer a faster alternative from the Airport to the Vidyasagar Setu via the AJC Bose Road flyover and further towards the NH2 and NH6 via Kona Expressway. Approximately over 1 Lakh Vehicles will predictably use this flyover every day.

This Elevated corridor reduces the travel time from 45 minutes to mere 10 minutes in the highly congested business district of Kolkata

Inside the project

Working in congested conditions with traffic running was a herculean challenge for HCC. Heavy work could only be done during 11.00 PM to 06.00 AM.

British Era Underground utilities posed a severe threat to the progress of the project and the biggest issue was that they could not be shifted so HCC had to make changes in the design of the piles to seamlessly continue the progress of the project.

The project being in close proximity to a few of the oldest residential and commercial units that date back to the Victorian era posed a grave threat to the stability of these units. While working in these areas extreme precautions were taken to take care of these structures

Overcoming all these challenges HCC successfully gifted this marvel to the residents of Kolkata.

Why it Matters

“The road connecting Parama Island and Park Circus is a four lane old road which did not had any further scope for widening. The ever increasing traffic through this route caused major jams and congestion. This Flyover resulted in reduced travel time and smoother traffic movement, fortifying the idea of an economic and green corridor. Lesser traffic congestion leads to lesser pollution viz: emission and sound.
The connectivity of the central business district with the airport improved a lot promoting Economic growth.
