World Economic Forum, Davos 2018

January 24, 2018: Mr. Ajit Gulabchand, Chairman and Managing Director, HCC, participated in the 48th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum held between 23-26 January in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland. The theme for this event was “Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World”. 

Mr. Gulabchand participated in two sessions.

The first session was on “Urban Migration: Peril or Promise?” where the participants discussed issues related to migrants at global levels. In 2015, migrants have contributed nearly 10% of the global gross domestic product. Urban centres are fast becoming a primary destination for both economic migrants and refugees, in light of this how can cities cater to the needs of the entire community? 

In this session, Mr. Gulabchand was one of the session leaders along with Mr. Devendra Fadnavis - Chief Minister of Maharashtra (India), Ms. Erica Kochi - Co-Founder of UNICEF Innovation (USA), Mr. Khalid Koser - Executive Director of Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (Switzerland), Mr. Miroslav Lajcak - President of the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly (USA), Mr. Pekka Lundmark - President and CEO of Fortum Corporation (Finland).

The second session on “Future of Urban Development & Services” brought together government representatives, mayors, business and civil society to help cities address their key urban development challenges. In this session the outcomes and impact of the initiative in 2017,  were showcased, in line with its mandate agreed at the Annual Meeting 2017, including:

-    Migration & Cities: Explore the types, causes and patterns of migration to cities. What are the impact of this migration on urban infrastructure, services and how these cities are affected? Highlight innovative solutions that can be employed in the context of the fourth Industrial Revolution and how greater public-private cooperation can enable cities to be better prepared to respond to this growing challenge.

-    The Sharing & Circular Economy & Cities: Assess the opportunities of the sharing and circular economy for cities and how policies, regulations can be designed to enable these new business models to co-exist with traditional business models.

-    Affordable Housing: Explore the factors that lead to lack of affordable housing in cities in different regions of the world, the solutions that can be employed and how greater public-private cooperation can assist.

In this session, Mr. Gulabchand participated as a discussion leader along with Mr. Matthew Grob - EVP and CTO of Qualcomm (USA), Mr. Jonathan Hursh - Founder and Executive Producer of Utopia (USA), Mr. Niels Lund - VP & Health Advocacy of Novo Nordisk (Denmark), Mr. Glen Morrison – CEO of Tarkett (France), Mr. Peter Oosterveer - CEO, of Arcadis (Netherlands), Mr. Srinath Sridharan – Member and Group Management Council of Wadhawan Group (India).
